RING OF BERA 2006

A day trip on the country roads in the lower Ring of Beara during a stay on Bere Island.

Below are a few shots of the photos included in the album. We started the tour as the ferry was landing in Castletownbere; after a quich stop at the Internet cafe to check email, a stop at the bookshop to buy books about Bere Island and postcards, and a lovely visit with a family friend, we drove a short distance to view the remains of the Dunboy Castle and the Puxley Manor. We continued along the coast on the narrow winding roads of the lower Ring of Bears. See the photo album for descriptions. Enjoy the slideshow with lilting Irish music.

"The country's only cable car, running between Ballaghboy and Dursey Island (above top- right photo) on the Beara peninsula, has just one operator at present and he has to work a seven day week to cope with the demand for the service. The car can carry six people and takes about ten minutes to cross the two hundred metres of Dursey Sound. It is also used to transport livestock and provisions for the islanders. However, with sometimes three hundred people a day looking to use the facility in the tourist season, there is now a call for a second operator to be employed, particularly during the summer months when demand is greatest." [Emmigrant Online, August 2006]

You can locate more photos of the Beara Peninsula with these Google search results. It's a very photogenic area.

The photo on the left shows a window view of St. Coleman's Cathedral in Cobh. To the right is a view from Bere Island looking toward Hungy Hill, a familiar view from the island. [Both photos are from the same slide show on Kodak Gallery.com ~ click either photo to link.]
These scenes are from a May 2003 trip to Ireland and include photos of The Cliffs of Moher, Doolin, Cobh, Bere Island, and places in between. See more scenes from Ireland on my Kodak site; no sign-in required to view these; just click on "View Slideshow." [Scenic views only; 51 slides.]

To the left is the famous staue in Cobh (pronounced "cove") Harbor in County Cork of Annie Moore and her brothers Phillip and Anthony. Annie was the first immigrant to arrive at Ellis Island in New York. The young woman on the far left is not the first person to stand and be photographed with the siblings. Send your photo with Annie in Cobh or in New York Harbor to eileen (at) irishthymes.com ~ it would be such fun to show a collection of them.

Spirited Ireland website logoFrom time to time, I come across a website that I think visitors to Irish Thymes might enjoy seeing; Spirited Ireland is such a website authored by German photographer and website designer, Nicola Watschong, with her many images of Ireland, plus music and links to other sites about Ireland.

Mark Hormel's Website features photos from theSouth West corner of Ireland in 2002. There are several nice photos of Bere Island and the surrounding area.

Description by the videographer, vladamikulec (more videos on website):
The Beara Peninsula (Irish: Béara) in Ireland is the southernmost of the main peninsulas on the south-west coast, bounded between the Kenmare "river" (actually a bay) to the north side and Bantry Bay to the south. It has two mountain ranges running down its centre; the Caha Mountains and the Slieve Miskish Mountains. The northern part of the peninsula from Kenmare to near Ardgroom is in County Kerry, while the rest lies in County Cork. The main tourist attractions are the ruins of Puxley Mansion, Dunboy Castle (Now being restored), The Copper Mines Museum in Allihies, Illnaculllen Island in Glengarriff (maintained by the OPW) and Derreen Gardens (Privately owned but open to the public). It was the traditional seat of power of the O'Sullivan Bere Clan and was one of the last points of Gaelic resistance after the Battle of Kinsale. It later became a major copper extraction point and became immortalised in the Daphne du Maurier novel "Hungry Hill."

Cutting through the high Caha Mountains, the Healy Pass rises 334 metres above sea level and passes between two of the highest peaks of the Caha range. Description by the Videographer, Star Wipe Studios (more videos on website):
February 2005 Castletownbere (Baile Chaisleáin Bhéarra in Irish) is a town in County Cork, Republic of Ireland. It is located on the southwest coast of Ireland, in West Cork, on Berehaven harbour. It is also known as Castletown Berehaven. The name of the town comes from the no longer extant MacCarty Castle and not Dunboy Castle, which was home to the O'Sullivan-Bere family and latterly the Puxley family.

watch the video The Irish President visits Dzogchen Beara

Description by the Videographer, robertrigpa (more videos on website):
Wouldn't it be great if all speeches...
were as moving as this one by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese. Wouldn't it be great if we could all find in ourselves such profound humour while being able to discuss so openly the subject most of us prefer not to mention - 'Death'. Wouldn't it be great if her visionary aims came to fruition soon.

watch the video Things To Do In Ireland

Description by the Videographer, bigbeninjax (more videos on website):
I've been asked what is there to do in Ireland. Is it all just old castles and beautiful scenery (like that's a bad thing)? Some of the local kids even think it's boring. Well, here's a short list of things you can do there. Maybe you can think of some others??? Feel free to post them in a video response or comment.

L.A. walk Oct. 20052 1/2 hour hour morning walk with a camera in Los Angeles
76 of my best snapshots on my 2 1/2 hour morning walk in the hills of Los Angeles. It was a relief to find my way home but there was much joy and delight in the journey! See map [pdf file].

Too long ago already, I took my camera on a walk in the neighborhood while visiting in California. View a slideshow of my walk in the Franklin Hills near the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. These are 76 of my best snapshots - I could hardly throw any of them out. I have since found this wonderful map of the neighborhood showing all the public stairways (.pdf file) connecting the narrow winding streets. This photo album and slideshow was created with the new iWeb in iPhoto 06 for the Mac.
